Looking at the newly presented Galaxy S9 and S9 + novelties, you might think that this time the South Korean giant Samsung did not even try – it’s very similar to last year’s models. But, as you know, the devil is in the details. And before us is another graphic example of this expression.
Yes, in front of us are models that visually differ little from S8 and S8 +. The same screen size, the same rounded edges. But with closer examination it becomes clear that we are facing really new devices. This is especially noticeable in the new cameras of devices, even though they have changed little in a constructive way.
The younger novelty of the flagship Galaxy line offers a 5.8-inch screen. The older one is equipped with a larger, 6.2-inch display. Aspect ratio of the screen, made by technology Super AMOLED, each of the devices is 18.5: 9. Both have the same resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels. The pixel density of the S9 model is 570 per inch, in the S9 + slightly smaller – 529 ppi. Screens, as it always does with Samsung, are very bright, crisp and juicy.
It’s all about the details
The fingerprint scanner, the location of which complained owners of last year’s models, is now not on the side of the camera module, but moved under it. It was really difficult to get to, especially if you have short fingers. As a result, one could often miss and get a finger on the camera’s glass. In new models, this problem is solved.
Now the fingerprint scanner is located in the right place – right in the middle, under the camera
Samsung notes that they have worked to improve the sound quality of stereo devices. The novelties use the dynamics of AKG, which are 40 percent louder than in the Galaxy S8. In addition, the speakers support Dolby Atmos 3D technology, which simulates surround sound. Journalists who managed to get to the new smartphone before all others note that with a direct comparison between S8 and S9, the speakers of the latter actually sound “richer” and louder.
The S9 model has stereo speakers. Auditory serves as the second
The company also improved the work of the face recognition scanner that appeared in the S8. Last year’s model offered the user two types of unlocking the screen: by scanning the retina of the eye or through facial recognition. The retina scanner though is considered more secure method, and still works with Samsung Pay, but often because of very bright illumination does not work how it would be desirable. On the other hand, facial recognition works faster, but less securely. And again, it does not support Samsung Pay. And yet he is not friends with bad lighting.
To solve these problems, Samsung has introduced the technology of “smart scanning” (Intelligent Scan), which incorporates the best features of the two technologies described above. Now the phone decides which unlocking technology to use. Poor lighting – the retinal scanner will work. On the contrary, too bright – the face recognition scanner will work. It would seem a trifle, but nice. Most users of this innovation, perhaps not even notice, but those who are more attentive to everything new – should like. After all, in the end, just such subtle details give the right to be called a flagship device.
Photography, slow-motion mode and AR Emoji
S9 – the first phone with a single camera having a double aperture
The biggest changes in the new models S9 and S9 + were their rear cameras. While all the smartphones currently on the market have a fixed lens aperture, the 12-megapixel S9 and S9 + camera has a Super Speed Dual Pixel camera with two diaphragms and optical stabilization.
In the S9 model, the camera switches the aperture depending on the shooting conditions. If there is sufficient lighting around (for example, during daylight shooting), then it switches to the aperture f / 2.4. The pictures are clear from angle to corner. But if the scene has poor lighting, the camera switches to the aperture f / 1.5, adding photos of light. There is no possibility to choose one or another aperture. The system works automatically. In theory, this makes camera devices more like real cameras, which tend to come with customizable apertures.
The S9 + model has the same 12-megapixel camera with a dual aperture, like the S9. As an additional 12-megapixel tele-lens
The S9 + model has a dual camera system. The second lens is located above the main lens, has a f / 2.4 aperture, and also an integrated optical image stabilizer. The dual camera as a whole works the same as on the Note 8. It has a “live focus” function that allows you to adjust the background blur in real time, which helps to find the right combination between realism and effect. In the novelty there is also a function of “multiframe”. It creates sets of four frames and makes them the last image with an already minimized noise level. The effect is similar to the one used to create HDR photos. The function composes multiple images with different effects to obtain a final image with a wider dynamic range.
Sensor camera Super Speed Dual Pixel allows you to shoot slow motion video at a rate of 960 frames per second with HD resolution. The same iPhone X can shoot “sloumo” only at 240 frames per second. The Japanese brother in the person of Sony Xperia XZ is not behind the novelty Samsung and can also shoot video at a speed of 960 frames per second, but it does not have an AI system that detects motion on video and slows them only for the time of this moment.
Selfi fans will find on the front panel of devices an 8-megapixel camera with f / 1.7 diaphragm and autofocus. And they should like the new function AR Emoji, which is the answer of Animoji iPhone X.
The AR Emoji feature allows you to turn your selfies into customizable GIF avatars
The function scans your face, but if you want, you can change a few things like hairstyle and appearance
Take a photo of yourself, and the camera will create a new emoto on it. The thing is somewhat similar to the 3D Bitmoji function for Snapchat. The user is allowed to change the shape of the face, style of the hairstyle and even appearance. Then, based on your AR Emoji, the software creates 18 GIF images with different expressions that you can share anywhere. As with Animoji, the function allows you to record short video clips based on your AR Emoji, which scans several specific points on your face for synchronization.
If you do not like the three-dimensional avatars of people, then you can turn yourself, for example, into a bunny
This all, of course, is very strange, stupid, but very cool. If you do not want to create AR Emoji based on your face, then the function has several presets with filters and characters.
Characteristics and iron
The microSD card slot is still in place and supports cards up to 400GB
While many smartphone manufacturers are starting to refuse such “retro” -fitch, as a headphone jack and microSD slot, Samsung with its new “nine” remains true to itself and its customers. Ultimately, they asked the company to ensure that these functions were retained in new devices.
The new S9 and S9 + work on the basis of the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. The younger model has 4 GB of RAM, the S9 + is equipped with 6 GB of RAM. Both devices have 64 GB of permanent memory. But, as already mentioned above, due to the presence of a microSD slot, free space can be increased up to 400 GB.
Samsung is almost one of the last companies on the market, which still does not want to give up the 3.5 mm audio jack
Perhaps the only thing that did not play in Samsung, so it’s with the size of the battery. The battery capacity of the S9 is 3000 mAh, and the S9 + has 3500 mAh. The S8 and S8 + models have exactly the same characteristics. Considering that the company’s last attempt to increase battery capacity turned into self-igniting Note 7 – the desire to leave everything here as before is completely justified and obvious.
And, of course, both new products have all the safety certificates and features peculiar to almost all modern flagships and not only devices. Here you have the protection IP68 (against water and dust), and fast charging and … 3.5 mm audio jack.
Smartphones Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 + are based on the latest version of the Android Oreo operating system with an add-on Samsung TouchWiz UI
Delivered S9 and S9 + will be pre-installed Android Oreo and proprietary UI TouchWiz. Owners of previous models of the company will understand everything without words. There is no point in repeating here.
DeX Pad has now become flat, has backward compatibility with the S8, and will also support future models of Samsung smartphones
Experienced users will appreciate the new DeX Pad. The accessory can turn S9 and S9 + into a sort of stationary computer. You just need to connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The new flat design of the docking station was chosen not accidentally. Put the smartphone in it can be used as a trackpad or virtual keyboard, if you have only a monitor or a TV. A real mouse, of course, will not replace it, but under certain conditions it can come in handy.
S9 and S9 + are connected to the DeX Pad via the USB-C port. In addition to connecting the monitor, you can use the devices as a stationary computer
Looks like the new station DeX Pad, of course, is not as respectable as the previous version for the S8 and S8 +, but has a number of advantages over the previous model. For example, it supports a resolution output of 2560 x 1440 pixels (the previous version supported only Full HD resolution), and still has a duplicate audio connector.
Samsung notes that the accessory is backward compatible with previous flagship models, and will also support the company’s future devices. The price for a new docking station DeX Pad was not announced, but, most likely, it will cost, like the previous version – something about $ 150.
The screen of the smartphone docking station turns into a trackpad. It is convenient to work, but this, of course, is not a full replacement of a real mouse
Bixby is still in the ranks
Whether you like it or not, but Bixby’s AI-Assistant has not disappeared into new devices. The “nines” still have a separate dedicated physical button for calling it (on the left side). The button can not be reassigned to something else. As you can not assign to it another virtual assistant, for example, from Google.
Samsung notes that they made their virtual assistant smarter. Added support for new stores, when choosing a product which Bixby will be able to talk about a particular thing in more detail, and then also directly buy it.
The glass back cover of the “nine” is still very fragile. Be sure to buy a case if you are afraid of the safety of the device
In addition, Bixby has become smarter in identifying places. By sending Bixby Vision, for example, to a hotel, he, using geotagged data, will tell you about what sights in the area can be found. The same goes for food. Direct Bixby Vision to various products, and it will tell you how many calories they contain.
Perhaps the most useful update for Bixby is Live Translations. Now the function allows you to translate from a foreign language in real time, using the technology of augmented reality. Want to translate, say, the menu from Spanish – just send Bixby Vision to the Spanish text, and its translation immediately appears directly above it.
It is necessary to take?
The phone’s functions should be useful first. And in this regard, the “nine” cope in many aspects. The new iron. Camera. The correct location of the unlock scanner. More clever AI-helper. New “Selfimogy”. Stupid, but funny. The older model has all the same, but it is slightly more productive and has two cameras. These are the only differences. Choose for every taste. To whom it is more, to whom it is less.
On sale models Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 + will arrive on March 16. Pre-order devices will be open from March 2. Colors to choose from: Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, Coral Blue and Titanium Gray. The prices for the devices will be $ 719.99 for S9 and $ 839.99 for S9 +. For Russian retailers, the price “traditionally” will be higher. Another question is whether all this is worth paying such money and changing the S8 and S8 + (which are still very good) to slightly upgraded S8 and S8 +. Leave this question for the consumer himself.
